Velma / Requiem - International Flanders Festival Ghent |
|
Be prepared for a classical hurricane!
The Swiss Velma ensemble has a habit of selling out any venue where it performs, and 2008 looks set to become the year where it will do the same in Flanders. In 2006, the audience was treated to a warming-up round, with 'Velma Superstar', which turned the codes of classical concerts upside down. This time, this rock band with a razor-sharp edge will take this experience to the next level, with its very own reading of the ultimate little night music: the overwhelming Requiem tradition, with masses for the dead.
Dont' even try to guess what this will boil down to - Velma will no doubt surprise you out of your wits!

Igudesman & Joo / A little nightmare music - International Flanders Festival Ghent |
|
Even sourpusses are welcome!
This highly encouraging title refers to a swirling show full of musical humor thought up and brought to you by tow Vienna-based artists.
Violin player and singer Aleksey Igudesman and pianist Richard Hyung-ki draw a hilarious picture of music and the act of music making in all its shapes and guises. Bach faces Vivaldi in a wrestling final, the Beatles go baroque music, and Mozart's music is turned into the soundtrack of the latest "Riverdance" show.
The music performed with the utmost virtuosity ranges from Bach to Rachmaninov, from Stevie Wonder to jazz and is skilfully wrapped in a mix of sketches, and more or less absurd humor.

Zefiro Torna & Dick van der Harst (Lod) / Assim - International Flanders Festival Ghent |
|
A mass that will keep ringing a bell!
City composer Dirk van der Harst creates his own (swinging) mass compositon based on Jacob Obrecht, a polyphony composer who lived in Ghent. A polyphonic composer who lived during the late Middle Ages, through the early Renaissance period, Obrecht was famous througout Europe.
The Ghent-born composer's second source of inspiration is Javanese Gamelan music (which is also polyphonic). This is minimalist Hindu music for voices and instruments.
"Missa" will be performed by the Zefiro Torna ensemble and "Nieuw Gents Stadsblazerscollectief".

Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, under the direction of Daniele Gatti - International Flanders Festival Ghent |
|
Back in Ghent at last!
"Downright splendid, full of youthfulness and enthusiasm", is what Richard Strauss called it in 1897. Founded in 1888, the Concertgebouworkest had to wait one hundred years before it was allowed to add "Royal" to its name. The Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest is rughtfully considered one of the world's best orchestras. We can't wait to hear them again to St.Bavo Cathedral.

Festival Mozaic's WinterMezzo Series, the well-known summer festival’s chamber concert series, takes place in October 2008 and January 2009.
Now in its fourth year, the WinterMezzo Series brings together artists from across the country, this year including members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Alabama Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and internationally-known pianist John Novacek.
Each concert cycle has two components, which take place on different days -- a Notable Encounter, which is an educational ‘musical tasting menu’ in which the festival’s guest artists present lively commentary, musical excerpts and insider observations accompanied by dinner and wine -- and then the full concert program. |

Samson & Dalila |
|
French grand opera meets ancient Israel as Hebrew warrior Samson faces his greatest opponent—the Philistine temptress Dalila. As Samson’s rejected lover, she’s only too happy to bring the Hebrew rebellion to an end by seducing Samson and robbing him of his strength—his magnificent hair. Even though blinded and chained, Samson destroys the Temple of Dagon and puts an end to the wickedness of the Philistines. Spectacular mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe weaves her spell as Dalila in an exotic production that evokes Biblical times. Tenor Frank Porretta brings down the house as Samson, Metropolitan opera baritone Kim Josephson schemes against him as the High Priest of Dagon, and Harry Dworchak thunders as the despised ruler Abimélech. Music Director Antony Walker leads the sumptuous orchestra and chorus, and Michele de la Reza and Peter Kope bring the talents of Attack Theater to the erotic Bacchanale, Saint-Saëns’ famous dance of the Philistines. |

Soirée Of Bach Violin Sonatas & Mozart Opera Selections |
|
Several of New York's leading period instrument performers will join forces to offer a concert to raise funds to support medical research to find a cure for brain tumors.
This program will include J.S. Bach sonatas performed by harpsichordist Andrew Appel and violinist Ryan Brown, and selected Mozart arias and ensembles performed by soprano Jessica Gould, mezzo-soprano Virginia Warnken, tenor Rufus Müller, bass Branch Fields, and others, accompanied by the Clarion Music Society under the direction of Steven Fox.
The operatic selections will be drawn primarily from Don Giovanni and Die Zauberflöte, two works whose themes of triumph over malevolence parallel the hopes of those who struggle mightily against a dread disease.

Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem |
|
The Cathedral Choral Society opens its 67th season on Sunday, October 19 at Washington National Cathedral with a performance of the one of the most beloved requiems of all time. Transcending the confines of specific faiths, this is a requiem for all beliefs, perhaps the most comforting and humane you will ever hear. The warm, unmistakably Brahmsian harmonies seem intended to heal the living as much as to memorialize the departed, and the sublime melodies flow seamlessly from beginning to end.
Also on the program: Sursum Corda by Edward Elgar and Te Deum by Antonín Dvorák.
New this season, an arts enrichment programs for children in grades 3 – 6 will be offered during Cathedral Choral Society concerts at $25 per child. For more information, please contact Daniel Ozment, Director of External Programs, at dozment@cathedral.org. |
