Noted EndeavorsAs President and CEO of WPA (and in her previous stint as as Artistic and Executive Director of Stanford Live), Bilfield has seen her share of “meet and greets” and the successful outcomes that can arise from relationships that develop from these sometimes stressful and exhausting post-concert fetes. Bilfield suggests that artists ask questions and learn about those in attendance as a way of developing relationships that might prove beneficial for both parties.

Projects such as “On Grace” with Anna Deavere Smith – a work for actor and cello featuring original music composed by Roman, which premiered in February 2012 at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral and is now performed around the country – were born from relationships. Josh discusses how to develop those relationships and to draw from them advice, a wider circle of contacts, and funding.

A creative artist, he’s dedicated to performance leadership, expanding new work through collaboration, and he’s also recognized as an accomplished curator and programmer. In his work as Artistic Director of Seattle Town Hall’s TownMusic series, his vision is to engage and expand the classical music audience. At the age of 22 Roman became the principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony before launching out on a solo career that makes him one of the most in demand cellists around the world. In 2011 Roman was named a TED Fellow.

Noted EndeavorsFlutist and festival artistic director Linda Chesis saw Cooperstown, NY as an ideal location for a music festival. With its picturesque lake setting, small town charm, restaurants and attractions, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame, The Farmers’ Museum, and the Fenimore Art Museum it seemed an ideal spot. Beginning with three events in 1999, Linda has since then offered the region more than 100 performances, from classical to contemporary, jazz to bluegrass, cabaret to kids’ concerts. The Festival has featured: Midori, Hank Jones, the American String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Tim Fain, Bill Charlap, Hilary Kole, Simone Dinnerstein, and Mark O’Connor. How did Linda Chesis do it? With a lot of work and a lot of love.
